In celebration of Commonwealth Day 2026, the Commonwealth Students’ Association hosted a high-level virtual dialogue bringing together student leaders from across the Commonwealth to explore how young people can help shape a more inclusive, innovative, and accessible education system.
Held under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together: Empowering Students to Advance Access, Innovation, and Inclusive Education for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the webinar convened representatives from Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Caribbean to reflect on the evolving role of students in education policy, governance, and development
Moderating the dialogue, CSA President Francis Azubuike welcomed participants and emphasized that students remain one of the most influential forces within the global education ecosystem. He noted that while students form the largest constituency within education systems across the Commonwealth, many still face persistent challenges ranging from unequal access to quality education to limited representation in decision-making processes. Despite these challenges, the session highlighted a growing movement of student leadership and advocacy across the Commonwealth. The panel brought together distinguished student leaders who are actively shaping conversations on education reform and youth participation:
- Tarik Lalla (South Africa) – student leader, researcher, and youth policy advocate serving on the National Executive Committee of the South African Students Congress.
- Christopher Siliva (Tonga) – higher education practitioner and former Chairperson of the University of the South Pacific Student Association.
- Mohamed Nabith Ahmed (Maldives) – educator and Vice President of International Affairs for the Maldives’ Network for Student Alliance.
- Tomas Serrut (Belize) – economics student and youth advocate promoting equitable education and regional collaboration.

Throughout the discussion, panelists explored several key themes shaping the future of education in the Commonwealth.
Students as Drivers of Change
Panelists stressed that students are not merely future leaders but active contributors to policy dialogue today. Strengthening student representation in governance structures and policy platforms was highlighted as essential to building responsive education systems.
Expanding Access and Equity in Education
Participants reflected on the structural barriers that continue to limit access to education across many Commonwealth countries, including economic hardship, geographic disparities, and unequal institutional resources. Panelists called for targeted policy reforms and investment to ensure that all students—particularly those from rural and marginalized communities—have equal opportunities to learn and succeed.
Innovation and Digital Transformation
The dialogue also focused on how technology and research collaboration can transform the education landscape. Speakers emphasized the importance of leveraging digital tools, cross-border academic networks, and student-led innovation to expand learning opportunities and bridge educational gaps.
Strengthening Student Organisations
Panelists highlighted the crucial role student organisations play in advocacy, leadership development, and accountability. Strengthening national and regional student bodies, they argued, would ensure that student voices remain central to decision-making in higher education.
Mobility, Collaboration, and Sustainable Financing
Discussions further explored the need for stronger academic mobility programmes, scholarships, and institutional partnerships across Commonwealth countries. Panelists also examined innovative financing approaches—including public-private partnerships and scholarship initiatives—to make higher education more accessible and sustainable.
Looking ahead, speakers shared a collective vision of a student-empowered Commonwealth education system—one where inclusive policies, innovation, and global collaboration create equitable opportunities for learners across all member states.
The CSA Commonwealth Day Dialogue reaffirmed the critical role of students as partners in shaping the future of education. By fostering dialogue among student leaders from different regions, the event underscored the power of collaboration in unlocking opportunities for a more prosperous and inclusive Commonwealth.
